In this retrospective study we analyse the findings of thymoma in dogs, cats and rabbits to assess any difference. Records of 15 dogs, 6 cats and 44 rabbits in which thymoma was diagnosed between 2005 to 2017 were reviewed. There are two types of thymoma in dogs: Benign - This is a non-cancerous mass which is non-invasive, meaning that it doesn’t invade surrounding tissues and Malignant - This is an invasive cancerous mass which does invade surrounding tissues and organs Thymoma is an uncommon canine neoplasm of thymic epithelial cells. It is seen in various breeds but may occur more frequently in German Shepherd Dogs. Middle-aged or older dogs can be affected and no sex predilection exists. A paraneoplastic syndrome of myasthenia gravis, nonthymic malignant tumors, …. Thymoma is classified as invasive or non-invasive.

A diagnosis of benign thymoma was made by transthoracic needle biopsy. The thymoma was removed surgically and the dog recovered without complications. At 4 months after surgery, the dog's activity was improved and it had gained weight. Other tumors (thymoma, squamous cell carcinoma, nasal carcinoma, hemangiosarcoma, and undifferentiated adenocarcinoma) have also been associated with hypercalcemia in dogs. In cats, humoral hypercalcemia of malignancy occurs less frequently than in dogs but has been reported with squamous cell carcinoma, multiple myeloma, and lymphoproliferative diseases. 2018-05-23 Over 40% of dogs with thymoma develop myasthenia gravis and 13% a second tumour intercurrent with thymoma.
